Getting Started

First Night at the Table

Monster Journal is built to stay out of your way mid-combat. Here's the whole loop in four moves.

Add a characterOpen the Characters tab and create your adventurer. Each character keeps their own journal, so a level-1 hero starts with an empty book
Encounter a monsterWhen the DM names a creature, find it in the Compendium and add it to your journal. You get its name and look, not its weaknesses
Log what you learnHit the troll with fire and it works? Tap the damage type and ink it in. Estimate its armour class and sharpen it fight by fight
Back up your journalSettings has Backup and Restore. It writes a single file you control: keep it in your cloud drive or send it to yourself. Restore it on any device

Does the app need an internet connection?

Never. Everything lives on your device, with no account and no sign-up. It works in the deepest dungeon of your friend's basement.

How do I move my journal to a new phone?

On the old device, open Settings and tap Backup, then save or share the file. On the new device, install Monster Journal and use Restore to load that same file. All your characters and inked knowledge come across.

Can I add my own homebrew monsters?

Yes. Add any custom monster with a name and a photo or sketch, and it gets the same knowledge tracking as every built-in creature. Your homebrew, and its photo, stay on your device.

I lost my journal. Can you recover it?

We can't, because your data never reaches us: it only ever lives on your device. That's why the backup file matters. Set a reminder to export one after each session and you'll never lose more than a night.

What's Next

Monster Journal has been succeeded by Campaign Journal, which carries the whole bestiary plus session notes, NPCs, quests, loot and the party. Monster Journal is no longer sold, so its store listing has gone, but your copy stays on your devices and keeps receiving updates.

Campaign Journal is out now on the App Store and Google Play.
